A song by an artist with a voice that you love

I can tell you right now that this is going to be a bizarre 30-days. This one isn’t what you think.

One of my early insecurities emerged during the hours at a time that I spent talking on a phone as a preteen.  Growing up, I think I spent so much time on the phone as a child that I developed an aversion to the thing. These days I can’t stand to sit on the phone for an extended period of time.  Anyway, ever since I was a toddler, I’ve had a noticeably deep and raspy voice that “carries.” It seemed to only get lower as I got older and settled in to my chill, easy-going demeanor.

The boys would always clown me because they thought I sounded like a man on the phone. People calling the house for my mom would ask, “Is this her son?” It was frustrating, embarrassing and there was nothing I could do about it. As I got older, I developed a phone voice so different from my own that my QA manager at my first call center job joked that he had the rewind my call and hear me say my name to be sure it was me.

It got better. One day in high school, a few homeboys were coming for my phone voice again when one of them said, “I think it’s sexy.”

Around that same time a terribly mistaken Minister of Music proclaimed that he knew I could sing because I have such a deep speaking voice.

I can’t sing, but I know somebody who can (Kanye voice).  Day 28—a song by an artist with a voice that you love is dedicated to the Queen, Bey. Here’s where it gets bizarre. The song isn’t necessarily by Beyoncé, and she isn’t singing on the song. “Tom Ford” by Jay Z is one of my favorites because I love his wife’s raspy adlibs.

I might not have a Beyoncé voice, but Beyoncé definitely has a Zuri voice and that’s good enough for me. So, drop me a line and tell me what’s good enough for you. What’s a song by an artist with a voice that you love?

Stop back by tomorrow for Day 27 of the 30-Day Music Challenge—A song that breaks your heart.
