In a high school drama, you have almost every example of the people you will meet in real life. Friends, lovers, unfulfilled authority figures and questionable overachievers all show up to the homecoming game of life. This is why so much of who we are starts to take shape during our high school years.
For today’s challenge, I had to choose a song that reminds me of someone I’d rather forget. Because I’m so skilled at holding grudges, I never want to forget the people involved. However, I do wish I could forget that time in my life.
When did my heart turn black? It was when my high school boyfriend’s other woman would write out the lyrics to “Be Without You” by the Queen, Ms. Mary J. Blige. At that moment, that song became my worst enemy. Home girl posted it on some blog site we all spilled our guts on those days. And, because we ran in the same circle, everyone saw it and everyone knew who it was about.
Today, those two are happily married with an adorable little boy. Me? I still almost flip my car over every time I hear that song. Some other time I’ll tell you about the day that it was literally playing on 3 radio stations at the same time.
Anyway, I’m not mad at them. I engage in cordial conversation whenever I see them at a baby shower or birthday party. I still don’t trust them. In fact, it is that time in my life that keeps me from really trusting anyone. So to all the friends I’ve pushed away, now you get me. I know what you’re thinking; I need to get over it. Please. Me and that song have beef forevvvva.
Tomorrow, we will jump back on a lighter note with “a song that reminds you of summertime.” In the meantime, don’t forget to comment and share!
