A song that reminds you of yourself

Welcome. Welcome. It’s Day 30 of the 30-Day Music Challenge.
Day 30, you ask?
Yes. Issa countdown.
A countdown to what, you say?
Mind your business.

I decided I would do this challenge on Pretty Menace instead of Instagram. Also, I’m working the challenge in reverse order, since I have a feeling that it is more challenging this way. So let’s get into it.

Day 30—A Song that reminds you of yourself. See? It’s challenging already. The other day I posted a meme on the ‘gram that (in so many words) asked my friends to name a song that remind them of me. The responses were so hood that they all had the word ‘Nigga’ in their titles.

It seems that I think of myself as a little more light-hearted than the people around me. For today’s challenge, I’m rolling with Janet Jackson’s, “Escapade.”

I was probably around seven years old when I was first introduced to the song at Vereen’s School of Dance. My class shimmed our way into a first place ribbon for our Jazz performance. I still do a little shuffle when I hear the song, but I don’t remember much of the routine. It’s the perfect example of an R&B song that wants so badly to be pop and I probably look like a goof ball when I wiggle around singing the words, but I think that’s what makes it so special to me.

So yes, “Escapade” is a song that reminds me of myself. It reminds me that I am talented, I am blue-ribbon worthy, and I am so adorable that it’s unfair. The song is flirty and fun—words that most people would never use to describe me. However, when I look in the mirror, it reminds me that there is more to me than “Trap or Die.”

Join the challenge! Drop a comment and share a song that reminds you of yourself. Make it a good one!

Come back tomorrow for Day 29 of the 30-Day Music Challenge—A song that you remember from your childhood.
